A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
